  13. Before starting, please make sure your modem is connected to your phone line and to your computer and powered on. Double-check that the CTB tools are installed properly as outlined in the preceding chapter.

  15. To begin,

  17. ‚Ä¢ Double-click on the hi-BBS‚Ñ¢ Client application located in the hi-BBS‚Ñ¢ Client Δí.

  19. The opening screen of hi-BBS and the Mail and Status palettes will appear.

  21. Connection settings
  22. The XBR hi-BBS server can be accessed from over 500 cities in more than 30 countries, because of its X.25  capabilities. A CCL connect file is used to tell your user application, the proper procedure to logon depending on your local X.25 network.

Different connection settings may need to be defined, if you connect to more than one hi-BBS server, or work with different types of modems and different networks. In hi-BBS, there's no need to store these many different settings into files with names you won't remember later or lost in forgotten places. Every setup that you will define will be conveniently kept in a Connections List window, always accessible.

  26. For the demo, we will connect to a standard modem line.

  28. ‚Ä¢ Under the Connection menu, choose Connections List...

  30. A Connections List window will appear.

  32. ‚Ä¢ Click New to create a new connection setting.

  34. The Connection Settings window will appear.

  36. ‚Ä¢ In the Connection Name field, type XBR Modem to identify the connection setting

  38. ‚Ä¢ In the User Name field, type GUEST, or the username you were given.

  40. ‚Ä¢ In the Organization Name field, type XBR.

  42. ‚Ä¢ Click on the Connection Tool button to display the standard CTB Connection Tool window

  44. ‚Ä¢ Choose the Apple Modem Tool, then enter the phone number to reach our server.

  47. ‚Ä¢ Select the type of modem corresponding to your modem from the popup menu at the bottom.

  49. ‚Ä¢ Click OK to close the window.

  52. Logging on
  53. You are now finished with the Connection Settings and back to the Connection List window, where XBR is selected (click once on it, if not).

  55. ‚Ä¢ Click Connect.

  57. ‚Ä¢ On the next window, asking for a Password, type:

  59. GUEST or demo if you were given a username
  60.  
  61. ‚Ä¢ Click OK.

  63. You will be presented with the standard Apple Modem Tool connection window, while the connection process is taking place. Once you have reached our server, another window will be displayed briefly, presenting the server logon steps.

  65. Once logged on, the Navigation Palette will appear in the top left corner of your screen.
